A Good Book, from Victor Niederhoffer. Henry Petroski, in his classic book To Engineer is Human, says that in his field, failure is almost a prerequisite for success, because only by reaching a point of failure can you define the limits of possibility. In addition to The Essential Engineer, published in 2010, Petroski has written a dozen other books. A good book to put engineering in perspective is To Engineer is Human: The Role of Failure in Successful Design and others by Petroski. To Engineer Is Human: The Role of Failure in Successful Design Review The moral of this book is that behind every great engineering success is a trail of often ignored (but frequently spectacular) engineering failures. On a dusty bookshelf at home, I have the book, "To Engineer is Human - The Role of Failure in Successful Design" by Henry Petroski. For what it's worth, I haven't noticed any striking resemblances. In fact, direct copying of biological organisms can lead to poor, or even disastrous, engineering designs. Since the book was published in 1982, the examples employed are somewhat dated. A really good book that changed my view on the subject was “To Engineer Is Human: The Role of Failure in Successful Design” by Henry Petroski. Consider all the failed attempts humans made to fly by building contraptions with flapping wings. The moral of this book is that behind every great engineering success is a trail of often ignored (but frequently spectacular) engineering failures. Posted April 29, 2010 at 5:35 am | Permalink. I remember reading “To Engineer Is Human: The Role of Failure in Successful Design” a long while ago and the take home lesson for me was we have to learn from our failures. I am reminded of Henry Petroki's brilliant book - “to engineer is human”. I just finished reading Henry Petroski's To Engineer Is Human: the Role of Failure in Successful Design. The work continues a theme from other books he's published, such as “Success through Failure: The Paradox of Design” in 2006 and “To Engineer Is Human: The Role of Failure in Successful Design” in 1992. Recently I read a compelling book published in the 1980′s called To Engineer Is Human. [4] To Engineer is Human: The Role of Failure in Successful Design, ISBN-13 978-0679734161.
